The Battle Brewering in Arizona

As violence continues to increase in Arizona border towns by illegal immigrants coming across from Mexico, the American federal government wrings its hands, does nothing, and continues to insist that it is in charge. The state of Arizona and Governor Jan Brewer disagree, and have had enough, so they have taken it upon themselves to remedy the situation.

In April of this year, the state passed SB1070, hailed - or decried, depending on one's point of view - as the toughest immigration law in the land. Tired of waiting for the United States government to perform its duty, and after pleas from Brewer have been ignored by , Arizona acted. The news prompted howls of rage from the Left in the U.S. and also from South of the border.

While it should come as no surprise that civilian liberals would rail against such a thing, the reaction from our own elected representatives has been stunning. Democrats almost universally denounced the law immediately after its passage, and then came the worst moment of all; Mexican President Felipe Calderone, speaking before a joint session of the United States Congress, received a standing ovation after attacking the immigration policies of Arizona.

Again ignoring the demands of a majority of Americans, the federal government halted construction of a border fence along Mexico and continues to push for "comprehensive immigration reform". Meanwhile, the border remains porous, and Americans continue to suffer.

President Obama vowed to have the Justice Department "look into" the legality of the Arizona law, hinting at a possible lawsuit against a U.S. state in favor of foreign nationals. Obama's Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, went further, telling an Ecuadorean reporter that "the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing a lawsuit against the act." Governor Brewer was outraged at learning of such a move, from the Secretary of State, and from a foreign land.

Brewer fired back almost immediately. In a statement, she said:

"To learn of this lawsuit through an Ecuadorean interview with the secretary of state is just outrageous. If our own government intends to sue our state to prevent illegal immigration enforcement, the least it can do is inform us before it informs the citizens of another nation."
As for the lawsuit, pending or not, Brewer struck a figurative "bring-it-on" pose straight out of The Matrix when she responded, "We'll meet them in court ... And we will win." My money is on Governor Jan. From the photos accompanying this article, she looks like she could whip Hillary with one arm of the law tied behind her back.

The worst case of blatant disregard for States Rights that you can imagine. If the Obama Administration were to win in court it would be one more nail in the coffin for states and a victory for Obama in moving toward a European style socialist government. If this dosen't wake people up I don't know what will.

Simple question, EJ...do you watch, or listen to, Glenn Beck?

I only ask because I am loathe to assume these days, but I am curious as well.

I once thought that Beck was toxic and listened out of morbid curiousity. Since he has joined Fox, however, and I can watch as I unwind from a hard day, I have discovered a respect for the man and an appreciation for his presentations I had not expected.

Nevertheless, I do believe that people are awakening as if cold water has suddenly invaded their warm bed clothes. Perhaps Obama really was too immature to carry out the goals of America's enemies, and popped his head up too soon.

How tragic for them to have invested so much in such a false idol, eh?

I wish that I could offer condolences, but alas, I cannot.

Yes I do watch Beck when I get the chance and for the most part I find it hard to disagree with much of what he presents to the viewing audience. He researches and documents his topics and that fact alone drives not only the left but all big government politicians crazy. There is method to his maddness and although I don't blindly follow, I can say he gives one plenty to ponder upon.

EJ, I agree. The reason I asked was because Beck to the loon...er, liberals is like Olbermann to us.

His entire drive to educate viewers on the Founders has been brilliant, something his leftist counterparts could never hope to match.

My only beef with Beck is that he seems to paint his own target. Nevertheless, his material is unassailable.
